Our bulls and cows have the best bloodlines available, and we keep our herd small to ensure each animal receives the highest quality care. We closely monitor every one of our cattle for optimum health and well-being, and use no steroids or artificial growth hormones. This approach lets us produce the most natural and delicious meat in the Napa Valley.

Only our best steer calves are selected for the Stewart Ranch beef program. Belted Galloways are a slow-maturing breed, and these calves spend 18 to 22 months grazing our pastures in the clean country air until they reach 1000 to 1200 pounds. Just as nature intended.

100% Napa Valley Raised

Stewart Ranch is a small cow-calf operation in Napa Valley, specializing in grass-fed Belted Galloway cattle.

Our cattle and our vineyards support each other. We feed grape pomace and stems to the cattle after harvest, and we spread our cattle’s manure in the vineyards to help replenish the nutrients in the soil. It’s a natural symbiosis that makes our wine country beef unique.

Taste the difference.

Our Heritage

Established in 1904 by John Stewart, Stewart Ranch is now on the fifth generation tending cattle and the land. John Stewart’s great granddaughter, Ailene Pritchett Tarap, incorporated the Belted Galloway breed into the ranch in the early 1980s.

First imported into the states in the early 1950s, Belted Galloways were slow to reach the west coast. Ailene was drawn to the breed’s hardiness, easy-calving nature, and low-fat cover thanks to its unusual double-hair coat. Today, Stewart Ranch is the oldest California breeder of Belted Galloways.

Ailene and her husband Paul Tarap raise and show their cattle around the country, and have several championship titles to their names. Ailene and Paul’s adult children stay active with the herd and lend a hand with the other activities on the property. In 2022, our family introduced our very own wine label, Belted Vines, celebrating our ranch and its famous “oreo cows.”
